Ingress protection - IP66 gasket design
Converteam SAS is a world leader in the supply of Electric Power and Propulsion systems. The company provides complete power and propulsion system packages for naval automation and on board dynamic positioning systems.
Converteam required expertise in Ingress Protection to resolve an existing problem with their handheld remote docking control.
The existing design used two 'O' Ring gaskets which could not being clamped satisfactorily to achieve the desired level of ingress protection.
3Minds developed a new slightly larger aluminium bezel and a moulded silicone seal around the existing design for the keypad and control electronics.
The new design has been prototyped and tested to the appropriate IP66 standard by the French customer and is now in production.

3Minds were asked to take a crude prototype system which had a number of shortcomings both functionally and with respect to manufacturability and to create a low volume product design ready for market.
3Minds proposed three possible design layouts and styling with product graphics for the system. The chosen one was then developed, prototyped and tested. Further refinements were introduced and a proposed solution delivered.
The system design has a main chassis in fabricated steel which houses the Mains PSU, Pump, Bottle store and main fan. The top of the enclosure is a polyurethane reaction injection moulded part that houses the main PCB, Keypad and Display interface the Laser module and Magtek card reader. The electronic pipette design (2 part ABS mouldings) fits into a holder which is integrated into the main product design.
